How to find photography jobs in Nepal

Updated · 3 min read

Most paid photography work in Nepal is not advertised on a job site. It moves through studios, referrals and social media, and it peaks around the wedding season. This guide explains where the work actually is and how to put yourself in front of the people who hire.

Know where the work is

Wedding and event photography is the largest source of regular paid work. Studios in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Pokhara, Chitwan, Butwal, Biratnagar and other cities hire extra people every season, because a wedding often needs more hands than a studio keeps on the payroll.

Beyond weddings, look at product and e-commerce photography, real estate and hotel shoots, corporate events, NGO and development documentation, fashion and portrait work, and music or brand videos. Weddings are usually the easiest place to start because the demand is predictable and studios are always short of reliable second shooters, videographers, drone operators and editors.

Get hired as a second shooter first

Studios rarely hand a stranger the lead role at a wedding. They do hire second shooters, assistants and editors, and that is how most wedding photographers in Nepal get their start. Working a few weddings beside an experienced lead teaches you the schedule of a Nepali wedding, how the family expects to be photographed, and how a studio delivers the final album.

  • Message studios directly with a short portfolio link, your district, your equipment and the dates you are free
  • Offer to assist on a smaller event first so the studio can see how you work
  • Be reliable: arrive early, dress properly, keep your batteries charged and your memory cards backed up
  • Deliver your edits on time. A freelancer who meets deadlines gets called back every season

Build a portfolio that studios can judge in a minute

Studio owners look at many portfolios in a season. Show 15 to 25 of your best images in one place, grouped by type of work, with a few clips if you shoot video. Make it easy to see your style, not everything you have ever taken. If you have no client work yet, photograph friends' and relatives' events and say so honestly.

An Instagram or Facebook page, a simple website or a shared album link are all fine. What matters is that it loads fast on a phone and that your phone number or WhatsApp is easy to find.

Use the networks studios already use

Work in this industry travels by reputation. Join photography communities and Facebook groups, attend wedding expos and photography meetups, and stay in touch with the people you meet on shoots. A studio that is short of a videographer the week before a wedding will call someone they already know first.

Get invited onto projects through Smaran

Smaran is the project and crew tool that wedding and photography studios use to run their season. A freelancer can create a free profile with their province, district and crafts, and studios using Smaran can find crew in the district where a wedding is happening and invite them straight onto the project.

You see each invitation with the role, the dates and the agreed payment, and you accept or decline. Studios rate you after the shoot, so good work is remembered by the next studio that looks for crew. Your phone number and email are shown only to studios inside their own panel, never on the public website, and Smaran does not take a commission on what a studio pays you.
